Carmen Michels Takes Over INAK Chairmanship from Peter Brunk

Berlin, October 16, 2024 – Carmen Michels (FKuR Kunststoffe GmbH) took over as chairperson of the Initiative for Natural Circular Economy e.V. (INAK) on October 11, 2024. She succeeds Peter Brunk (BIOTEC Biologische Naturverpackungen GmbH & Co. KG.), who had successfully led and significantly shaped the initiative (formerly the Verbund kompostierbare Produkte e.V.) since 2018. The handover followed a member vote from October 10, 2023, in line with the initiative’s reorientation.

“I am excited to continue driving forward innovative solutions for a sustainable circular economy alongside INAK’s dedicated team. The biological circular economy plays a crucial role in the urgently needed transformation towards a circular and resource-efficient economy. It is essential that we use natural resources responsibly and close biological material cycles to achieve long-term climate and environmental protection goals.

As the Initiative for Natural Circular Economy, we aim to contribute to a factual and evidence-based dialogue on the use of biodegradable materials, as there are still many misconceptions. Additionally, we will advocate for innovation-friendly and technology-neutral frameworks to ensure that innovative biopolymers can gain a foothold in the market,” said Carmen Michels.

INAK extends its heartfelt thanks to Peter Brunk for his years of dedicated service and significant contributions. Under his leadership, key successes were achieved, including the establishment of certified compostable bio-waste bags as an approved collection tool for bio-waste in German households. Brunk laid the groundwork for repositioning the initiative to better address current environmental policy priorities and ecological challenges.

Other board members include Marcel Philip Barth (BASF SE), Friedrich von Hesler (Novamont), and Karsten Buth (Profectus Films).
