We congratulate Entsorgungsgesellschaft Steinfurt mbH (EGST) on achieving 2nd place in the competition “Germany’s Best Organic Waste Bin Campaign”!
Through the use of certified industrially compostable organic waste collection bags, bin inspections, and excellent public outreach, contamination in Steinfurt County has been significantly reduced in recent years. Some municipalities initially had contamination rates of around 12% (plastics, glass, and other residual waste), while others started at 3–4%. Today, all cities and municipalities in the county have contamination levels around just 1.5%.
On May 1, 2025, a revision of the German Organic Waste Ordinance will come into effect nationwide, requiring composting facility operators to ensure no more than 3% foreign materials in collected organic waste. EGST began its efforts for clean organic waste and high-quality compost back in 2014 and permitted the use of certified compostable collection bags early on, positioning itself as a pioneer in this field nationwide. For this achievement, EGST has now been awarded second place, prevailing over more than 40 competitors.
